Measuring A Ring Size for a Finger

Measure your finger at the end of the day.  Please avoid measuring a finger when it is either hot or cold.

Hands differ slightly in size.  A ring worn on a finger on the left hand will most likely not be a perfect fit for the same finger on the right hand.

You can measure a finger using a tape measure.  Please measure the circumference of the finger in millimetres, which will correspond to the ring size.

It is preferable to measure a finger rather than the size of a ring.

Using a length of string or ribbon, wrap it around the base of the finger.  Typically, a ring should slip on to your finger easily and you should be able to ‘wriggle’ it over your knuckle on taking it off.

With a marker pen, mark the point on the string or ribbon where the ends meet.

Measure the string or ribbon in millimetres with a ruler.

Please choose the closest measurement to the chart below to identify the ring size.

Please be advised:

The string or ribbon should fit snugly to produce an accurate size.

Finger size can change during the day and be dependent upon the weather.  To be more confident in the ring size, you can try measuring your finger at different times of day, and on different days, to provide comparisons.

Please avoid measuring your finger when cold or wet as your finger will be at its smallest size.

If the ring is intended as a gift, you could borrow one of the recipients’ rings with a similar width as the ring you would like to choose and similarly measure it using the guide below.

The estimated average size is approximately L / M in the UK.

Many factors go into selecting a diamond, however, this information somewhat relates to where your money is going.  After my years of selling diamonds the most important factor is also ‘gut’ feeling.  You will know when you have found the right piece of diamond jewellery for you or to give as a significant gift.
